A recent Pardon Services Canada staff event was held at a shooting range where we learned how to use firearms safely. Remington, a firearms manufacturer stresses that safety should remain a top priority and they offer the following tips:

  • Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting.
  • Firearms should always be unloaded when not in use.
  • Make sure the gun’s safety is on when the gun is not being fired.
  • The muzzle of the gun should always be pointed in a safe direction.
  • Use the appropriate ammunition for each firearm since using the wrong ammunition can cause personal injury and result in ruining the firearm.
  • Make sure there is no ammunition in the chamber or magazine before loading the gun since debris can result in the barrel of the gun bursting when firing.
  • If the gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled,  unload the firearm and dispose of the cartridge safely.
  • Have your gun serviced regularly to make sure it will perform properly.
  • Learn everything you can about the firearm you are using by reading the manual it comes with.
  • Only shoot when sober to avoid accidents.
